The Rules-Texas Holdem Poker

Rules - Texas Holdem Poker

Texas Hold'em or just Hold'em as it's sometimes called is now probably the best known & most played form of Poker, especially online. This is largely due to the massively popular World Series Of Poker which of course has been televised in the U.S.A since the 1980's, & also because it is regularly on television in the U.K.

Outline Of The Game

Texas Hold'em is more often than not played with up to 8 players to a table, but theoretically can be played with up to 22 players.
The object of the game is for each player to make the best hand possible from the 2 cards he or she is dealt and the 5 common cards on the table.

Betting

Before any cards are dealt, the 2 players to the left of the dealer make 'blind' bets. The first 'blind', or 'small blind', is a percentage of the minimum bet for the particular game being played, with the second 'blind' or 'big blind' being the minimum bet for the table.
After both blind bets have been made then the 2 'hole' cards are dealt to each player face down & the players discretionally look at them.
The next person to speak is the player to the left of the big blind. He must call, raise, or fold, but cannot 'check' (this is when there are no bets on the table & you don't want to place a bet. You can only check when there are no prior bets on the table including the blinds). This goes all around the table, including the two blinds, until all bets have been equalized.
After this first round of betting the dealer 'burns' (throws away) the top card & deals three cards face up in the centre of the table. This is known as 'the flop'. There is then a 2nd round of betting before the top card is 'burned' again & another community card is dealt ( known as 'the turn' or 'fourth street').
There is then another round of betting before the burning of the next top card & the last community card is dealt ('the river' or 'fifth street'). The final betting round then takes place before the showdown!

Those are the very basic rules of texas hold'em poker & it is essential that any player new to the game has a good understanding of the ranking of the hands, as discussed in a previous post.

And remember, NEVER bet more than you can afford to lose, any form of gambling can be extremely addictive & common sense should be applied at all times.
